PHP C Extension
PHP supports extensions written in C to provide additional functionality. This allows PHP to use the 51Degrees C API to get device properties much faster than the pure PHP API.

Building
The 51Degrees API for C can be built into a native extension for C, allowing much faster detection (over 100x faster) and reduced server load. However, it does have a more complicated install process. This guide covers how to build and install the extension for Linux. Mac OS X and Windows are not currently supported.

Configuration
Before the 51Degrees PHP C extension can be used for device detection you need to configure the php.ini file to tell the module where the data file is located and how many worksets should be created initially.

When the 51Degrees PHP C extension is installed and configured you can start using the device detection capabilities. This page details the functions you can use to match a single user agent or use a set of HTTP headers to allow the API to find the most relevant ones.
