Warp Elite and Obsidian
This week we focus on two new offerings from ZTE. ZTE is one of the top five largest smartphone manufacturers in its home market of China, and top ten worldwide. ZTE primarily sells products under its own name but it is also an OEM for several smaller brands. Initially founded 30 years ago as Zhongxing Semiconductor Co. Ltd, there was a name change 12 years ago to Zhongxing New Telecommunications Equipment Co. from where we get the ZTE moniker. All of the devices in this article can be detected with our latest data file update available for download now.
ZTE Warp Elite N9518
The ZTE Warp Elite was launched as a Boost Mobile exclusive and was marketed as Boost Mobile's "most feature-packed smartphone for under $200". If you're thinking the name is a little familiar you won't be surprised to know that the Warp Elite is a successor to the ZTE Warp Sync from the 2014 generation of devices. The new handset runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box and sports a 5.5 inch display with a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution.
Internally the handset packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 with a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU running at 1.2GHz and naturally this is accompanied by an Adreno 306 GPU. Memory-wise you get 2GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a MicroSD card slot for a further 64GB expansion. This compares favourably to the Snapdragon 400 and 1GB of RAM found in the Warp Sync. A non-removable 3000mAh battery powers the unit which ZTE claims will last for up to 20 hours of talk time.
The Warp Elite is outfitted with a 13MP rear camera with LED flash paired with a 5MP front-facing camera. On the connectivity side of things, there is Bluetooth and 4G LTE support thanks to the Snapdragon 410 chipset. The Warp Elite's closest kin is the Motorola Moto G 201; the phones square off pretty evenly and the Warp Elite actually gets the jump on the Moto G 2015 with customers having to cough up another $40 to get 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The Warp Elite is available now for $179.99.
ZTE Obsidian Z820
Whilst the ZTE Warp Elite is billed as affordable but feature-packed, the ZTE Obsidian goes one further and really strikes deep into budget territory. This is a lower-end offering, aimed at those who prefer a cheap device with the basics covered. Like the Warp Elite, the ZTE Obsidian also runs Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box but this time it has a much smaller display, 4.5 inches with a resolution of 854 x 480.
This time ZTE have plumped for a MediaTek 6735M chipset to fit inside the handset. This comes with a quad-core Cortex-A53 CPU running at 1.0GHz and a ARM Holdings Mali-T720 MP2 GPU. Naturally, as a budget device, something has got to give and in this case there is only 1GB RAM and 4GB internal storage, but at least there's a MicroSD expansion slot capable of supporting 32GB cards. Battery has also suffered with a 1800mAh unit and just six hours of talk time.
The rest of the features are all pretty basic but still enough to get the job done. They include a 5MP rear camera with LED flash, 2MP front camera, Bluetooth 4.0+A2DP, GPS/A-GPS, single micro SIM card slot, accelerometer sensor, Micro USB and headphone ports, and perhaps the most interesting feature, 4G LTE support. That last point is notable as even the Motorola Moto E 4G, considered one of the current best budget phones, costs $30 more for 4G. The ZTE Obsidian is available now for $99.
