Huawei P8
This week we added the latest smartphones from the worlds largest telecommunications manufacturer Huawei. The company has been described as China's most globally successful company and last year became the number 1 applicant for international patents and is currently the forth largest smartphone maker in the world. Following on from last years Ascend P7 the latest flagship smartphone to be released in Huawei's Ascend lineup is the P8. The Huawei Ascend P8 comes in three flavours, Standard, Premium and Lite, in order to appeal to a wide range of consumers with different needs and budgets. Firstly looking at the P8 standard edition we see it has a 5.2" screen with a 1920 * 1280px resolution on an IPS panel.
Huawei says the Ascend P8 uses the world's first 13-megapixel rear camera sensor that captures light in a RGBW (Red-Green-Blue-White) pattern, it also affixes an 8MP front camera. The internal hardware is comprised of four Cortex-A53 cores and four Cortex-A57 cores with a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU all situated on HiSilicon's Kirin 930 chipset. 3GB RAM and 16GB internal storage are included as standard, with a MicroSD slot allowing the expansion of a further 32GB of internal storage. Other features include a 2680mAh battery, a whole suite of satellite navigation features including GPS, A-GPS, S-GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou, Bluetooth 4.1, LTE connectivity, NFC, several sensors and support for dual Nano SIM cards.
The other two flavours of the P8 are labelled the Premium version and the Lite version. One of the chief differences between them is the amount of available internal storage, the P8 Standard edition packs 16GB whilst the P8 Premium edition will come with a larger 64GB. With the Lite version we get a smaller screen with a 5.0" 720p display compared to the P8 Standard's 5.2" 1080p, the amount of RAM is also a full GB less, at 2GB rather than 3GB. Other differences include a weaker 5MP front camera and a CPU clocked lower at just 1.2GHz. The P8 Standard edition is available in Titanium Grey and Mystic Black Champagne colour options, while the Premium version is available in Prestige Gold and Carbon Black. Price wise the P8 Standard will set you back about €500 and the P8 Premium will cost €600, whilst the much cheaper P8 Lite will only cost around €280.
Huawei P8max
The Huawei P8max is the upscaled version of the P8, for those who prefer a phablet sized device. The device blurs the lines between phones and tablets with a huge 6.8" screen. The screen covers a massive 83% of the front of the device although resolution is less than you would expect for the size at just 1080p, the same as the Huawei P8 Standard edition. Just like the smaller offerings, the P8max has a metal unibody made of aerospace-grade aluminum. It's quite slim at just 6.8mm and it features a 7 layer heat conducting structure, which Huawei claims helps to keep the chipset operating 5°C lower than competing devices. The device is powered by a Kirin 935 chipset with a 64-bit octa-core processor running at up to 2.2GHz and a Mali T-628 MP4 GPU unit. Outfitted with 3GB RAM and 64GB internal storage as well as a MicroSD slot for a further 64GB of storage.
In the camera department we're offered a 13MP camera with OIS, however at the moment it's not clear if it uses the unique RGBW sensor of the smaller P8, but the phone does have a DSLR-like image signal processor, additionally the front selfie camera has a 5MP sensor. The phablet is powered by a respectable 4360mAh battery, which according to Huawei will last over 2 days of normal usage or 1 day and a half of heavy usage. Like the 5.2" flagship, the P8max is a dual Nano SIM, dual-standby device with a plethora of connectivity options including 4G, NFC, Bluetooth, GPS, Glonass and BeiDou, its LTE connection can also reach up to 300Mbps. Other features include a 1W speaker mounted on the bottom of the device which promises to provide ample audio strength, seven different sensors including a noise suppressor for enhanced calling quality and a wide range of camera features such as autofocus, touch focus, panoramic shot and HDR. The P8max will cost €650 but there will also be a cheaper version available for €550 which only comes with 16GB storage.
