51Degrees is delighted to announce its agreement with enterprise open source software company Liferay to provide device detection services for its enterprise product, Liferay Digital Experience Platform (DXP).The agreement provides the Liferay Mobile Device Detection app the capability to detect over 44,530 hardware models so that Liferay customers can optimise user experiences server-side and add device level insight such as device price, age and video format support to analytics.
Liferay Digital Experience Platform (DXP) is a Java-based platform used to manage sophisticated digital experiences such as self-service customer portals, intranets and public facing websites that integrate with external services to provide rich customer experiences.
Major enterprises have been highly successful augmenting the default responsive front-end of Liferay DXP with server-side optimisation for a world class mobile-first experience. The Liferay Mobile Device Detection app is installed in Liferay and uses 51Degrees device intelligence to quickly and accurately identify the exact device and personalise the customer experience. This includes making best use of available bandwidth by only delivering assets required to render the UI and adding or removing device and OS-specific functionality such as text message call to actions for mobile or mouse driven hover menus for laptops and desktops.
Michael Han, VP Services for Liferay explained: “Some of our largest customers including banks and media companies are benefiting from the ability to pinpoint the exact device a customer is using and optimise their experience. It’s a cost-effective strategy that enables them to deliver a consistent mobile-optimised user experience without necessarily developing a native app for each mobile platform - or asking customers to install new software.”
We selected 51Degrees to supply the mobile device database for Liferay Mobile Device Detection because it's a comprehensive, fast and scalable device detection service that fits well with our open source business model. Their technical team collaborated particularly well with ours, leading to smooth on-time development. Michael HanVP of Services, Liferay
Speed of response is an important criteria for delivering an optimal user experience. 51Degrees performs with better than 99.9% matching accuracy against more than 791,000 combinations of device, operating system and browser or app to ensure Liferay DXP customers always have the best possible experience.
In partnering with 51Degrees, Liferay has been able to offer a lite device database to its open source community to use for testing purposes.
Responsive Web Design with Server Side Components (RESS) allows applications to tailor applications to client devices. Unlike typical responsive design, RESS allows applications to send optimised image sizes, choose what data to render, and in general reduce resource consumption. Without the server-side components, applications will deliver the same markup to all devices and it is the device browser that renders the web page based on CSS and/or Javascript instructions.
The current version of Liferay Mobile Device Detection, powered by 51Degrees, enables Liferay EE 6.2 clients to optimise user experience and improve client-side performance per device family using RESS principles. The new version of the Liferay Mobile Device Detection extends the successful relationship with 51Degrees to support Liferay DXP customers.
