Updates
This week a combination of 166 new hardware devices, browsers and operating systems have been added to the device detection database.
Chief among new devices this week is Acer's Liquid Z5 Duo, this is the dual sim version of the Liquid Z5 and is marketed towards first time smartphone buyers or the budget conscious. The device has a large 5" screen and is one of the cheapest devices available with these screen dimensions. As can be expected from a budget device the case is plastic but it is also quite slim at just 8.8mm. One interesting design feature of the Z5 is the button located below the camera lens, this can be used to wake the device or as a shortcut to the camera application.
Although the screen size is quite generous the resolution is not, coming in at just 854 x 480 pixels, for a screen this large this has a noticeable effect. The internals are also rather mediocre, running on a Mediatek chipset with just a dual core 1.3GHz processor, the device is going to struggle with CPU intensive applications such as games. Other specifications include a MicroSD slot up to 32GB, Bluetooth 3.0, Mali-400 GPU, 2000mAh battery and 512MB RAM.
Unfortunately the Liquid Z5 is not going to have an easy ride as it's direct competitors offer a far more modern experience. Specifically Motorola's Moto G is cheaper, performs better and already has a very good reception in the entry level markets. There is just one area where the Liquid Z5 could outperform the Moto G and that is with its camera. Although it is equipped with a 5MP camera, which is pretty standard fare these days, you do also get a f/2.4 lens; meaning far more sensor pixels than many other cameras and as a result a better image.
Several new versions of browsers have been added to the database this week. First up from Amazon we have Kindle Silk 3.14, secondly Opera Desktop 21.0 by Opera, thirdly Icedove 24.3 by Debian and finally Sleipnir 5.1 from Fenrir.
This week also brings us the addition of other mobile devices including the Hisense V912, ZeThink C93 and Panasonic's T11, among many more.
