The table below compares 51Degrees to other leading IP intelligence providers across the measures that matter when choosing a solution. The measures where the providers differ most come first. 51Degrees is the only provider in the table to return the shape of the area as a Well Known Text polygon, to weight alternative results by how likely each one is, and to randomize coordinates so the output protects privacy. Each competitor fact links to the source it was taken from. Where a provider does not publish a fact, the cell says Unpublished rather than guessing.

  1. 51Degrees builds its IP intelligence from the registration records published by the five Regional Internet Registries (AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, and RIPE NCC), the bodies that allocate every IP address in use. Registration records state who each block of addresses is allocated to. Some other approaches lean on routing registries, which are separate databases describing how traffic may be routed, and which have documented staleness and forgery problems. See RFC 7682, the RIPE Labs study The IRR Landscape: Data Quality, and the CAIDA paper IRRegularities in the Internet Routing Registry for the evidence.

The FAQ does not name file formats, a confidence or radius field, a free version, prices, or ISO accreditations.

The area is returned as a Well Known Text vector geometry object. Well Known Text is an open standard for describing shapes, so the returned area can be drawn on a map or used directly in common mapping and database tools. As the IP intelligence page explains, returned coordinates are a randomized location to within circa 1 km of the user's actual position, refreshed once a day, so the result protects privacy while remaining useful.

Where the evidence supports more than one answer, each value is returned with a weighting showing how likely it is, so an application can act on the certainty of the result rather than a single guess.

Source: MaxMind web services response documentation, which describes a single returned location per lookup, with values from 0 to 100 representing MaxMind's confidence that the returned country, city, or postal code is correct. These values are returned by the GeoIP web services and are not part of the downloadable databases.

  10. A location confidence indicator and a coordinate accuracy radius answer different questions, so the table shows them as separate rows. A confidence indicator says how far to trust the returned place, for example whether the town should be relied on at all. An accuracy radius is a distance in kilometres around the returned coordinates within which the user is expected to be. A provider can offer one without the other, and the mechanisms are not interchangeable.

The 51Degrees Lite data file carries the registered name, owner, and country of each network and no town or coordinate data (see the IP Intelligence documentation). MaxMind describes free GeoLite2 city data as considerably less accurate than the paid GeoIP data. IPinfo Lite carries country-level location and network details only. Free versions also update less often than the paid versions.
