This week a combination of 236 new hardware devices, browsers and operating systems have been added to 51Degrees.
The latest flagships from two of the the big hitters in the industry have been officially added this week. The devices in question are the new HTC One (M8) and the Samsung Galaxy S5. Both of these flagships have stayed consistent to the well known designs of their previous incarnations but internally have a lot of improvements. First up we take a look at the HTC One (M8).
Officially released on Tuesday this week the case of the HTC One (M8) is made almost entirely out of metal, 90% in fact, compared to the original One which was 70% metal, the sleek unibody has a deep curve which gives it the illusion of being thinner than it actually is. The screen has grown to 5.0", up from 4.7", but bezels have been slimmed down and hardware keys replaced by on screen ones so the new model is still about the same overall size as its predecessor.
The HTC One (M8) is fitted with Qualcomm's latest system chip, a Snapdragon 801 running quad core CPU's at 2.3GHz, this is bumped up to 2.5GHz for the asian markets. The GPU is an Adreno 330 and there is 2GB RAM included, which is the obligatory minimums for a flagship at the moment. The camera of the HTC One (M8) is 4MP with 1/3" sensor, 2 micron-sized pixels and an f/2.0 aperture, if this wasn't enough it also has a second camera to gather depth information. This setup apparently mimics the stereoscopic abilities of the human eye and it worked well for them before. A noticeable improvement also comes to the front camera, jumping from 2.1MP to a wide angled 5MP.
HTC's new flagship can be purchased in Gunmetal Gray, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold in some markets now, expect to see it at a carrier near you very soon.
Next we take a look at Samsung's new flagship, the Galaxy S5. Sporting a similar design to the Galaxy S4 complete with a new style mock leather back. Design aside there are a lot of new features packed into the new flagship, following in Sony's footsteps the device is now water and dust resistant and has an IP rating of 67, in taking a leaf out of Apple's book they have also added a fingerprint sensor and breaking new ground for a mobile device they have also added a heartrate monitor.
Hardware internals have been updated to include a 5.1" Super AMOLED display, a snapdragon 801 chipset, quad core 2.5GHz CPU, 2GM RAM and a 16MP camera. Unlike many devices the Galaxy S5 has opted to keep its hardware keys rather than make the move to on screen ones. The new model is a tad larger than the Galaxy S4, 6mm taller, 3mm wider and 15g heavier, the IP rating may have had a part to play in these increased dimensions. Other features include NFC, infrared, microUSB 3.0 and an SDcard.
To begin with the Galaxy S5 will be available in four colour styles; Black, White, Blue and Copper. Be sure to expect the usual Samsung variants to be close around the corner such as the S5 Zoom,however as the Galaxy S5 is already IP certified we may not see an S5 Active.
Other devices added this week include LG's G Pro 2, Sony's Xperia Z2 Tablet and Huawei's Mediapad X1, among many more.
