This week 93 new devices have been added to the device detection database, including 10 Smart TVs and some of the latest mobile devices from the CES show in Las Vegas.
Chief among new devices this week is the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, for those who haven't been keeping abreast with the latest developments; the Xperia Z1 Compact is the international version of the Xperia Z1F released last month by DoCoMo in Japan. The Z1 Compact as it's name implies is the more manageable sized sibling of Sony's flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z1. Rumors have been ripe for months about the appearance of this new phone, often previously referred to as the Z1 Mini, finally at CES the phone and it's official name was released to the public.
Sony have decided against the oft used 'mini' moniker and instead opted to go with 'compact'. This was primarily due to claims that mini was synonymous with inferior versions of the original full sized model, as can be seen with other vendors 'mini' versions of their respective flagships, such as the HTC One Mini and Galaxy S4 Mini. Both of these have diluted hardware specifications compared to their parent devices. The Xperia Z1 Compact's tagline is "better, not bigger" and looking at its specs we can see they have managed to fit a lot into such a small frame.
The Z1 Compact is equipped with the same Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2.2GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU, 2GB RAM and Adreno 330 GPU that you'll find on the much larger Xperia Z1. The display comes in at 4.3" as compared to the 5" of the Z1, a smaller form factor will always have a price to pay but Sony have succeeded in keeping almost everything!. There is a drop in battery power from 3000mAh to 2300mAh and the resolution is 720p rather than 1080p, as such it will need less juice so the reduced battery power is not going to have any noticeable effect on real world usage.
All the other features included on the parent Z1 such as the 20.7 MP camera with large Exmoor sensor, Triluminous display technology and resistance to dust and water with an IP58 rating are included, making this the first mini compact flagship to have almost the same hardware and features as its much larger sibling. If all this wasn't enough Sony have also upgraded the TFT screen used in the original Z1 to an IPS display for the Z1 Compact, this resolves the concerns about poor viewing angles that are sometimes accompanied with Sony devices.
The Z1 Compact bucks the current trend towards large 5" or larger high-end android devices that seem to be cropping up from every manufacturer and doing so without losing any of their hardware power. At the current price bracket and size it puts it squarely in competition with the iPhone 5C, however with all things considered it is easily a contender for the much more expensive iPhone 5S. Topping it all off Sony are offering a free Sony Smartwatch 2 for every preorder in the UK. Several other deals can be found here for other regions in Europe. The Xperia Z1 Compact is expected to be shipped in February.
This week also brings us the addition of 10 new Sony Smart TVs. These include both the 32" and 42" display versions of the W670A and the W650A models. These smart TVs are all equipped with Sony's Triluminous display technology, a wide array of input ports and Wi-Fi direct. Other devices added this week include the ZTE Radiant, Micromax X088 and the HTC 8XT, among many more.
