Huawei P9
A few weeks ago we looked at Huawei's latest mid-ranger the Y6 Pro, we're now back again with Huawei but this time we're taking things up a notch to look at this years latest big hitter, Huawei's new generation flagship model, the P9. The P9 has just been released, almost exactly a year after the Huawei P8 was, which could be argued was the first Hauwei device to garner widespread acclaim outside of its Chinese market homeland. We include support for all of the devices mentioned in this article within our latest data file, download it now, optimise your web content and maximise your investment potential.
Announced last month at an event held by Huawei in London, the P9 features a 5.2 inch IPS-NEO display with a full HD, 1920 x 1080 resolution, 24 bits per pixel and 423 pixels per inch, all wrapped up in Corning's Gorilla Glass 4 protection and an aluminum body. The P9 actually looks a lot like the Nexus 6P, also made by Huawei. The overall dimensions of the Huawei P9 are roughly equivalent to Apple's iPhone 6s, which if you consider that the latter only has a 4.7 inch display means Huawei have managed to fit in a whole 0.5 inch extra diagonal display into the same real estate. Compared to Samsung's Galaxy S7 which has a similar screen size the Huawei is a little bit longer and wider, but almost a full cm thinner whilst retaining the same 3000mAh battery capacity, although it does lack IP certification for water and dust resistance.
The self produced Kirin 955 system on chip provides the power, this is an upgraded version of the Kirin 950 used on Huawei's Mate 8. With ARM's big.LITTLE format the octa-core CPU clocks in at 2.5GHz for the Cortex-A72 quad cluster and 1.8GHz for the Cortex-A53 quad. When it comes to memory there will be two versions, one will come with 3GB of RAM and 32 of internal storage whilst the other will roll out with 4GB and 64GB storage, although both will come with a microSD slot for storage expansion so it would be that extra 1GB RAM that's going to make or break your decision. Other features include a back mounted fingerprint sensor, Type-C USB support, Bluetooth 4.2 with A2DP and LE and full 4G LTE connectivity.
Like many flagship devices this year the claim to fame is the new camera. Huawei partnered with Leica, the German optics specialist, to bring dual 12MP rear units to the P9, one capturing colour and the other monochrome. The idea is that they work together to achieve less noise in low lighting environments whilst hightening details in bright ones. For photography enthusiasts there's a f/2.2 aparture and the field of view is claimed to be equivalent to a 27mm lens in optical imaging. You'll also get the latest phase detection autofocus technology and a dual LED flash amongst the standard features. It was shaping up to give the Samsung S7 camera a run for its money until we saw that Huawei hadn't seen fit to give the P9 any kind of image stabilisation, for me that's a deal breaker, your mileage may vary.
