Lumia 830

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin 2014 (IFA) has now almost run its course and for the last five days we have seen a bevy of new smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and mobile accessories. Microsoft and Nokia recently treated us to three brand new devices known as the Lumia 830, Lumia 730 and Lumia 735.

The Lumia 830 runs on Microsoft's latest Windows 8.1 and Nokia's Lumia Denim and comes in the thinnest and lightest design yet seen from the duo. Essentially Lumia Denim is an updated UI for the line of Lumia devices and claims to provide a better Cortana experience. If you haven't heard of Cortana before it's Microsoft Nokia's version of voice commands, much like those found with Androids 'OK Google'. Denim will also provide better camera integration, including a faster shooting process, camera wake from sleep and 4K video recording on supported devices. Lumia Denim will premiere on the Lumia 830 but expect to see the update rolled out to more Lumia devices before the end of 2014.

Speaking of cameras, the midrange Lumia 830 has a 0.9 front camera and a 10MP PureView rear camera with lenses produced by the German lensmaker Carl Zeiss, one of the most respected names in the lens industry. The camera also has a new Rich Capture feature which can add more exposure to darker areas of an image and add an the LED flash after you've taken an image, apparently the camera will capture two images, with and without flash and later allow you to combine the images, a HDR feature is also enabled with the devices camera. The device is equipped with a 5.0" IPS display with 720 x 1280 resolution and protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 3.

Internally the Lumia 830 will run with a quad core Snapdragon 400 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an Adreno 305 GPU, capacity for a 128GB SDcard and a 2200mAh battery, the device also supports wireless charging. The polycarbonate back panel and front glass are housed in an aluminium frame and the general shape of the device has moved toward a much more angular look, almost Sony esque, in comparison with previous Lumia's which were characterised by their deeply curved edges. Nokia is calling this device "the first affordable flagship" with the cost of this handset said to be €330 in Europe and approximately $430 in India, and will be available late September.

Lumia 730 and 735

Microsoft Nokia also unveiled midrange devices in the form of the Lumia 730 and Lumia 735, designed to fit in just under the Lumia 830 in terms of price. The Lumia 730 is a dual SIM smartphone with a similar screen to the 830, albeit smaller, coming in at 4.7" with 720 x 1280 resolution and Gorilla Glass 3. Internally the Lumia 730 also runs on a quad core Snapdragon 400 with the same 1.2GHz CPU's and Adreno 305. Other hardware includes 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 128GB SDcard capability and a nice array of connectivity features one wouldn't always expect to see on an entry level device, such as NFC.

One thing where the Lumia 730 differs significantly from the Lumia 830 is that it only has a 6.7MP primary camera, however it does have a 5MP front camera rather than the 0.9 found on the 830. Both of the Lumia 730 camera's also have a wide angle lens for better low light performance. With the rise of selfies and the current predisposition to Instagram everything this will appeal to many and it's simply nice to see a capable front camera. 4K video recording is not available on the Lumia 730 but that does not come as a surprise considering it's not supposed to be a high end device.

The Lumia 735 is simply an LTE enabled version of the Lumia 730, which itself comes with 3G capability. Both devices are planned for a September release and the announced price is €199 for the Lumia 730 or you can have the LTE enabled Lumia 735 for just an additional twenty euros at €219.
