Last week we looked at Google's latest and first ever high-end tablet offering, the Pixel C. This week we're staying with the tablet theme but moving to more affordable waters with devices from Lenovo and LG.
Lenovo YOGA Tab 3
First up we look at the cheapest of the two tablets this week, that being the Lenovo YOGA Tab 3. You only need a glance to see what this budget tablet's selling point is, namely as seen in the image below, it's the inbuilt stand. Yes there are other tablets with inbuilt stands, albeit not many, and yes you can always buy an aftermarket stand to fit just about any tablet - so lets see if the Lenovo YOGA Tab 3 has any more to offer.
Naturally with an inbuilt stand, the tablet is very heavy, weighing in at 467g. It's also pretty bulky, it's not something you'd want to be carrying around everywhere and is most suited for home use. Display wise we get an 8.0 inch IPS panel with an 800 x 1280 resolution. Internally it has a Snapdragon 212 processor with four Cortex-A7 cores at 1.3GHz, Adreno 304 GPU and 1GB RAM, quite low-end specifications for a new tablet.
So, it has a stand, it's heavy, it isn't very powerful, what does it have? One positive is the stereo speakers and another is the 16GB internal storage, expandable via a MicroSD expansion slot. However, what really makes this device shine is the battery. Lenovo have seen fit to include a 6200mAh unit, which should last around 14 hours of video playback. The YOGA Tab 3 is available now for approximately $165.
LG G PAD 2
When it was first released our next tablet sat a little higher in market price than the previously discussed Lenovo YOGA Tab 3, although now this next device is a little older they hold comparable price positions. This tablet in question is the LG G PAD 2, a successor to last year's LG G PAD tablet range, one step up from the G PAD F, initially available as an 8.0 inch version and limited to within the South Korean market.
There's a very similar display to the Lenovo device, 8.0 inches, 1280 x 800 resolution and IPS technology. However, inside the device is much more powerful hardware. A Snapdragon 400 running four Cortex-A7 cores at 1.2GHz and an Adreno 305 GPU provides the juice, whilst the RAM has been boosted to 1.5GB as compared to 1GB on the original LG G PAD model and there's also 32GB internal storage with a MicroSD card option.
There's a 5MP rear and 2MP front camera, a 4200mAh battery, low energy Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and GLONASS support and the LG G PAD 2 ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop. All very uneventful so far right? The kicker is that this is one of the first devices to utilise a stylus and a full size USB port which will accept any USB connection, including keyboards and mice. You can pick up the LG G PAD 2 discounted to around $150.
