Should it be significant to you?

BLACKBERRY PASSPORT

On September 24th BlackBerry released their newest smartphone. The device goes by the name of the BlackBerry Passport and has an interesting form factor, as the name not so subtlety hints it is exactly the same size as an international passport.

This smartphone is targeted to business community, professionals who spend most of their time working on spreadsheets, emails and browsing at the same time. In this case, if your website is B2B, you should consider optimising it to this device.

The device has a perfectly square 4.5" IPS display with a 1440 x 1440 resolution. For protection there is a stainless steel frame and Corning's Gorilla Glass 3. Directly underneath the display is a full QWERTY keyboard that is also capable of gesture input, doubling as a touchpad. The dimensions of the device are 128 x 90 x 9.3mm and it weighs 195g, so it's not the thinnest device but it's by no means chunky either, it is however considerably heavy.

Internally the BlackBerry Passport runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 and has a quad core 2.26GHz Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded by a further 128GB via a MicroSD slot. All this is kept juiced up with a pretty hefty 3450mAh battery which is said to provide 444 hours of standby and 23 hours of talk time or approximately 84 hours of continuous music play.

BlackBerry have seen fit to provide a 13MP rear camera which not surprisingly takes square photos, we also get a 2MP front camera and several camera features such as Optical Image Stabilisation, HDR, autofocus and an LED flash. 1080p video recording is also available at 60fps. A plethora of connectivity options come as standard, including Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS as well as LTE capability. A slimport adapter will be available to provide VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort options.

The Passport will run on BlackBerry OS 10.3 which will debut for all BlackBerry OS 10 devices in the coming weeks, it also has both Android and Amazon App store support and has a single Nano SIM slot. Available now in the USA, Canada and the UK, availability in 27 more countries will come later this month. BlackBerry are offering the Passport on their store for $699, but if you order now you can get it for just $599, whilst in the UK the Passport will set you back just under £500, roughly the same as a top end Android device or iPhone 6. Reports so far indicate the device has been well received by the public with many stores selling out within hours of the launch and over 200,000 sales claimed within the first three days.
